Fused Glass Lacework Bowl Designs


Fusing is the process where glass is heated in a kiln to a specific temperature so that a desired modification to the glass occurs. A kiln firing is heating the glass to one of these temperatures. There are three common temperature ranges used with each modifying the glass in a different manner.

Most of the objects that I fuse used two firings with some using three. The first firing is to a fusing range to produce a blank of glass from the individual pieces.

The following images show three sample pieces made from strips of glass fused together in the first firing. A second firing is then done to slump the glass blank into the desired form. The glass often slumps in a somewhat unpredictable manner. When this happens it just adds to the unique feel of a fired piece.


Large 12" Lacework Bowl

Large Lacework Dish Large Lacework Dish Sideview The two images show different views of this octagonal lacework bowl. The bowl is 12" wide and 3.5" deep. The top rim, 3/4" wide, and the base are made from two layers of glass. The base is 4" wide. The first firing blank is a true octagonal shape. However, during the slumping stage the lacework glass lines that form stokes pull the rim edge pieces into the slumping mold some.

On the right side of these first two images one of the lacework lines has done a little curve during the slumping, yielding a little uniqueness to the bowl.

Large Lacework Dish Blank

The third image, on the left, shows the initial firing blank resting on the slumping mold prior to the slumping firing. This shows the octagonal form of the blank prior to slumping. The same general shape change happens to the other two designs shown here.

This bowl was constructed using two Spectrum Fusing blue opal glasses. The darken color is Spectrum Medium Blue Solid Opal fusing glass while the lighter shade is Spectrum Hydrangea Blue Solid Opal. The Medium Blue is used for the rim and base areas. The Hydrangea Blue is used for the narrower spoke and lacework lines.

Medium 10" Lacework Bowl

Medium Lacework Dish Medium Lacework Dish Sideview The two images show different views of this octagonal lacework bowl. The bowl is 10" wide and 3" deep. The base is 4" wide. The shape of the bowl consists of 4 octagonal rings. Three form the sides of the bowl and one has formed the outer part of the base.

This bowl, without the heavier rim, is more delicate. The spoke lines have pulled the original octagonal side down into the bowl more. As a more delicate design it has acoustical properties. Tapping the outer rim yields musical note like those produced by larger leaded crystal bowls or metal bells.

Medium Lacework Dish Blank

The third image, on the left, shows the initial firing blank resting on the slumping mold prior to the slumping firing. This shows the octagonal form of the blank prior to slumping into the mold.

This bowl was constructed using three Spectrum Fusing blue opal glasses. The darken color is Spectrum Medium Blue Solid Opal fusing glass, middle blue color is Spectrum Mariner Blue Solid Opal fusing glass, and the lighter shade is Spectrum Hydrangea Blue Solid Opal. The Medium Blue is used for the spokes and the base area. The four lacework rings are each constructed with overlapping pieces of the Hydrangea and Mariner colors.

Small Lacework Dish Small Lacework Dish Sideview This small 6" square dish was a proto-type for my lacework fusing projects. It was constructed using four Spectrum opal glass colors laid out as overlapping 1/2" strips of glass.
