Fused Glass Image of Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth for Meditation.

I no longer do fusing. Please use the link above to go to the current home page.

The Chartres Labyrinth The Chartres Labyrinth on stand This fused disk is created using glass paints fused into two layers of clear glass to make a durable 1/4" thick 8" square tile (with slightly rounded corners). The entrance and exit to the labyrinth is at the bottom of the images.

The image on the left has the tile laying on a flat surface while the right image of the same tile shows it on a small clear plastic display stand.

It is an accurate depiction of the Medieval Pavement Labyrinth at the Chartres Cathedral in France. It is one of the best examples of a Medieval Pavement Labyrinth and is found in the west side of the Chartres Cathedral. It was constructed in the beginning of the 13th century,

The Chartres Labyrinth is an eleven-circuit design, dived into four quadrants, and encircled by an outer ring of lunations (half-moon shapes). It is about 42 feet in diameter and a walk into the center and back out again is about one third of a mile.

Such labyrinths were used for meditation. Often small tile copies were placed within the church for meditation by tracing the path with your finger.

For my depiction of the Chartres Labyrinth I used black paint for the definition of the labyrinth's path and brown paint for the outer ring of lunations. The inner circular part of the design reminds me of a tree, perhaps the "Tree of Life" to the original designer whose identity is unknown. So I used green paint for the half circles and the final path sides, the tree's trunk, brown paint.

The cost for this tile, including a small plastic stand, is $100 (US) and includes shipping via USPS Priority Mail within the US.

This item can also be shipped internationally using the First-Class Package International Service of the USPS. For a price quote of the additional shipping cost I need the country it would be shipped to.

I have a flyer, a one page PDF file, which I've used to describe my fused glass replica of this labyrinth. You can view or download it via the following link: The Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth In Fused Glass. It assumes you have the Adobe Reader available.

Large Chartres Labyrinth

As a special order item I've made the labyrinth design within a 12" circular blank as shown on the left. This increases the surface area of the labyrinth design by a factor of two. The lower layer is white opal glass while the upper layer is clear glass, needed so I can draw the pattern onto the glass over a lightbox.

The image shows the design with my finger at the starting point for entry into the labyrinth's path. This size is ideal for tracing the path for meditation.
