If you are a connoisseur of fine woods then you've found the site to order your
individually built handmade hardwood stool from. On the left is a stool made from solid American Cherry.
The seat is 18" by 12" and the stool is 24" high.
This style stool can be made in a wide range of heights and seat size.
My stools are individually crafted. I burn my name and the year you order the rack
on the bottom side of the top.
I cannot handcraft my stool in oak and compete with Asian hardwoods fabricated in far distant lands. The cost per stool crafted in American Red Oak, American Cherry or American Walnut is $300 (12/2010 price) plus packing shipping and insurance to the lower 48 states.
For a stool made from an exotic wood like Bubinga (one of the African Rosewoods), Wenge, Zebrawood or Kingwood (one of the most expensive woods still available) the cost would be $300 plus whatever the additional wood cost would be. Bubinga would be about an additional $100 while Kingwood would be perhaps $200 more for the wood. The work effort is the same just the raw limber is much more costly for the exotic woods. On the other hand I don't know of any source for stools handmade in exotic wood!
The finish is three coats of Clear Satin Wipe-On Poly finish by MinWax, and a final Clear Satin Gel-Varnish by Old Masters coat on the seat to give a harder final coat. I would never apply a stain to these naturally beautiful hardwoods, except the Red Oak. If you want stain, on anything but oak, please find another woodworker.
Below on the left is a top view of the stool. This is a photo of the finish new. Over time the cherry wood will increase it's beauty. The grain, dark spots, and some figure will remain. On the right is a side view showing the leg and rung structure.
I order my wood from Wall Lumber Co., about 80 miles from my home in Durham, NC. If you are interested in the exotic woods available you can go to their site using the link shown, click the Products item on the left of their Home Page and then take the Exotic Hardwood item - Wall Lumber Co.
